About The Position
Under
the guidance of the Ecological Senior Technical Lead, the Ecologist I supports
a variety of ecological projects executed by the NASA Environmental and Medical Contract (NEMCON) in direct
support of the NASA Environmental Management Branch (EMB) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). These projects are defined in the
NASA Ecological Monitoring Plan and assist with surveying a variety of
terrestrial and aquatic species related to abundance and diversity at KSC. The Ecologist I will assist scientists with
implementing study designs, and either assist or independently conduct, field activities
including the collection and management of data for qualitative and
quantitative reporting, and statistical analyses. This position may also
provide support with writing and reviewing various types of natural resources documents
such as biological assessments, management plans, and environmental
assessments. This position may lead or
supervise less experienced technicians and specialists.
How You Will Fulfill Your Mission
- Assist in the collection and management
of scientific data used by scientists to conduct statistical analyses and reporting.
- Responsible for performing fieldwork in a variety of conditions that includes traversing undeveloped terrain or being in aquatic environments for long periods of time; field work will include a mix of sampling techniques to monito vertebrae and invertebrate species at select sites throughout KSC
- Support
technical projects as they relate to the ecological impact of rocket launches,
land management, and other activities conducted at KSC.
- Work as part of a team or
independently to identify and record details of native habitats and species,
including invasive species.
- Responsible for collaborating with
other entities to study and improve terrestrial and aquatic ecological systems
at KSC.
- Assist with any departmental
operation, as needed, or directed, to maintain workflow or respond to emergency conditions.
- Perform a range of administrative duties required to fulfill program
or contractual requirements related to a designated area
of specialty, including record keeping, inventory, supply requisitioning,
database entry, vehicle upkeep, and similar duties as assigned; to include environmental outreach, compliance, and
management of hazardous waste resulting from workplace activities.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of Bachelors Degree
- Five (5) years of experience supporting ecological work
- Familiar
with or have direct experience operating motorboats, 4x4 vehicles, such as
Utility Task Vehicles (UTV) and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV); familiar with or
have direct experience with boating operations in both inland water and
nearshore coastal environments.
- Must
possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a team
atmosphere including the ability to effectively communicate and work with all
levels of employees or independently based on project assignment
- Possess
a valid driver’s license and be eligible for clearance at a federal facility
- Must
be able to successfully pass an occupational health physical to obtain and
maintain qualifications and certifications required to perform this work.
- Familiarity
with industry-standard equipment and handling practices of wildlife
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate of Arts in Biological Sciences, Wildlife, Fisheries, or another
relevant field
