General Description

Under the guidance of the Project Manager, the Environmental Data Analyst will provide energy and water conservation support to NASA’s Langley Research Center (LaRC).  In addition, this position   will provide practical expertise necessary to ensure that our customers are in compliance with applicable laws, NASA policies, Executive orders, and LaRC’s energy and water goals as well as assisting in reviewing policies, procedures and standards.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

  • Identify priority environmental aspects and impacts essential to the implementation and continual improvement of the customer’s Environmental Management System.
  • Update energy management and sustainability planning documents.
  • Assist with the identification, development, cost estimation, implementation, and measurement and verification of savings for energy efficiency and water conservation projects and initiatives.
  • Utilize various data management tools and applications to perform data entry, quality control/assurance, analysis and reporting.
  • Provide support in utility and industrial electricity billing management, including review and extrapolation of billing data.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to various customer stakeholders, sustainability strategies, and initiatives.
  • Champion continuous improvement in customer’s sustainable operational performance while providing suggestions on meeting potential anticipated future sustainability requirements.
  • Assist with preparing training, marketing materials, and thought leadership to broaden knowledge of sustainability topics and services both internally and externally.
  • Collect, calculate, review, and analyze trends in utility energy and water utilization data (with and without meters) at a campus-wide level and for individual industrial facilities
  • Interpret and explain trends and variances in utility, energy, and sustainability data for key metrics, such as cost, consumption, and reduction.
  • Examine equipment, facilities, and operations, such as wind tunnels and other industrial facilities, and provide data visualization and consultation on opportunities for improving energy/water efficiency and sustainability.
  • Prepare agendas, presentation materials, handouts, and notes for quarterly and annual meetings attended by varying levels of management.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences (including sustainability, energy), data sciences, or equivalent related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in energy management, energy metering and monitoring.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Excel programming (including but not limited to pivot tables, macros, etc.).
  • Strong technical writing skills


Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering(environmental, mechanical)
  • Experience using GIS tools, building automation applications and systems, metering data interfaces, and creation/manipulation of energy/sustainability dashboards.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, lighting, and industrial plant equipment (e.g., compressors, cooling towers, etc.).
