the areas of federal program, environmental and safety regulatory compliance,
technical research, and writing. Qualified candidates will require past
experience in a similar position with proven track record of success in a
flexible, fast-paced environment.
HSG is seeking an Environmental
Scientist at the NASA Langley
Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, with responsibility in the
following areas:
Responsibilities:
·
Ensure a consistent, systematic approach to achieving
continuous compliance with all major environmental regulatory requirements.
·
Research and review federal regulations, state regulations,
permits and local ordinances/codes to
determine which operations will be assessed.
·
Design and implement a comprehensive multimedia environmental
compliance assessment program for sites to include: auditing, reporting,
database development, facility monitoring, record keeping, and development of
proactive environmental management programs.
·
Conduct environmental audits to
identify environmental compliance and management system implementation gaps,
along with related corrective actions. These audits will include observations
of site facilities and processes; interviews with facility personnel; review of
relevant facility documents, permits, and plans; identifying conformance issues
for each environmental media; and preparing reports of findings. conducts
comprehensive environmental compliance.

Document findings and
identify corrective actions for compliance with federal, state, and local
regulations.
·
Work closely with facility and
environmental managers to improve compliance processes, procedures, and
equipment.
·
Support the development of
environmental regulatory, compliance and management projects,
written facility plans, and compliance reports.
·
Utilize Geographic Information
System (GIS) techniques and software to produce maps for clients.
·
Prepare concise site investigation
reports that assess potential environmental liability risks and regulatory compliance at varied facilities.
Requirements:
Education:
·
Bachelor’s degree in
Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related science
field.
Experience &
Certification:
·
A minimum of two (2) years of
directly applicable, technically-related experience.
·
Multimedia environmental compliance
as well as expertise in conducting general environmental multi-media
inspections.
·
Experience with Geographic
Information System (GIS) techniques and software to produce maps and client
deliverables is a plus.
·
It is highly desirable for the
candidate to have at least one of the following:
- Demonstrated experience performing Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) site inspections, as administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality
- Be a Virginia certified Plan Reviewer and Inspector in accordance with Erosion and Sediment
Controls and Storm Water Management regulations from the Commonwealth of
Virginia.
- Certified as Class A and Class B Operator(s) in accordance with Underground Storage Tank
regulations; 2 years of experience in a tank compliance program.
- Completed required training in Sections 106, 110, and 111 or have demonstrated 3 years
work experience directly related to NHPA compliance
- DOT Hazmat Employee training in accordance with 49 CFR 172.700; 173.1(b)
- RCRA Hazardous Waste Management training in accordance with 40 CFR 262.34(a)(4);
264.16 and 265.16
Skills:
·
Be adept at
interpreting, managing, and analyzing data.
·
Must have strong
communication (written and oral) skills.
·
Must be a self-starting,
multi-tasker with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Other:
·
Must reside in the
Hampton, Virginia area. Out-of-state or out-of-area candidates will not be
