GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
The Special Inspector is expected to perform all aspects of Special Inspections and observations in conformance with GES, Inc. quality standards and client schedules. Inspections will be performed on construction materials as outlined in chapter 17 of the International Building Code.
This role ensures that all designated construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes. The Special Inspector observes critical structural and materials-related operations, including but not limited to concrete, welding, bolting, masonry, soils, fireproofing, and other designated systems. The inspector documents findings, notifies responsible parties of discrepancies, and works closely with project engineers, contractors, and code officials to ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly. This position requires technical knowledge of construction materials and methods, strong attention to detail, and certification(s) in applicable inspection disciplines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform special inspections as required by IBC Chapter 17, approved project plans, specifications, and jurisdictional requirements.
- Observe and document construction activities related to structural systems, materials, and components, including but not limited to:
-Concrete placement and reinforcement
-Structural steel welding and bolting
-Masonry construction
-Wood framing and connections
-Soil and earthwork operations
-Spray-applied fire-resistive materials (SFRM)
- Verify that materials used on-site comply with approved submittals and project specifications.
- Identify non-conforming work or materials and immediately notify the contractor, design professional of record, and building official as required.
- Prepare accurate and detailed inspection reports documenting observations, test results, and any deficiencies found.
- Monitor corrective actions and verify that non-compliant work is brought into compliance before project continuation.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable codes, standards (e.g., ACI, AWS, ASTM), and jurisdictional requirements.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and building officials to facilitate inspections and resolve issues efficiently.
- Ensure all testing and inspection equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
- Attend project meetings when required to discuss inspection findings or technical issues.
- Participate in 1-2-1 discussions with the Field Supervisor.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED UPON HIRE
Minimum of 1 ICC Special inspection Certification
Valid driver’s license and insurability under GES limitations.
REQUIRED WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE
- GES Safety Orientation (PPE, site hazards, emergency response)- required upon hire and as updated
- Nuclear Guage Safety & Transport Certification (must obtain within 30 days of employment and must maintain active certification as a condition of employment) ((As Applicable))
- Trench and Excavation Safety Awareness Training (must obtain within 30 days of employment and must maintain active certification as a condition of employment)
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification (must obtain within 30 days of employment and must maintain active certification as a condition of employment)
- Heat Illness Prevention Training (must obtain within 30 days of employment and must complete annual certification training as a condition of employment)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
- Capable of standing, walking, climbing ladders/scaffolding, and navigating uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and materials.
- Good vision and hearing to observe work and communicate effectively on noisy construction sites.
- Manual dexterity to operate testing equipment and tools.
- Physically able to crouch, bend, stoop, and reach as required for inspections.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS DESIRED
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in structural inspections
- Familiarity with IBC Chapter 17, ACI 318, PTI (Post-Tensioning Institute) standards, and applicable ASTM standards.
