Job Duties/Functions: 


 


Microbiologist Intern position in a service oriented environmental microbiology laboratory, under the technical oversight of Environmental Microbiologist performing operations including:


 


  • Water, wastewater and food microbiology

  • IAQ assessments and testing

  • Investigative microbiology studies

  • Support to environmental ecological studies, launch vehicle, payload and hardware testing

  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with customers

  • Conducting laboratory and field microbial evaluations

  • Conducting microscopic, biochemical and molecular diagnostic techniques to detect and identify microorganisms

  • Preparation of microbial media and laboratory reagents, disinfectants, etc.

  • Generate/review sampling plans for investigative studies

  • Responsible for generation of quality control reports

  • Assist in maintaining laboratory accreditations as required

  • Support Space Shuttle potable water operations and other microbiological tasks

  • Prepare microbial media and laboratory reagents, disinfectants, etc.

  • Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment; cleaning, packing, sterilization, etc.

  • Follow laboratory and field safety and health procedures and maintain laboratory cleanliness

  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly quality control procedures

  • Generate reports of laboratory results

  • Other duties as required

     

     

    Education/Training:

     

    Student or recent grad in 4 year degree program in a biological science, preferably microbiology, or a related science.  Previous experience can be considered to fulfill educational requirements.  Environmental microbiology lab experience is preferred.

     

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

     

    Current knowledge/experience in microbiological methods.  Knowledge/experience with maintaining laboratory protocol and accreditation process.  Good oral and written communication skills.  Good computer skills for typing and MS Office 

     

    Working Conditions: 

     

    Primarily works in a laboratory environment with work in the field as required.  Must have a valid driver’s license to operate a government motor vehicle.  Must maintain security clearance and area access badging.  Available for evening, weekend and holiday work as required.  Occasional travel.

     

     

    Must thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees.  General office environment may require minor lifting and bending.

     

    Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures.  Participates in and supports the KEMCON safety program.  Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility.  Identifies potential hazards, concerns, and safety incidents and reports to supervisory personnel.
