Integrated Mission Support Services (IMSS) is seeking a qualified Scientist II (Environmental Hazardous Waste Management) for a short-term assignment to support the Environmental Services Organization.


Studies, analyzes, and evaluates complex environmental problems. Applies scientific knowledge or chemical, civil, mechanical, or other engineering methods to prevent pollution; develop solutions to existing environmental problems; and predict possibility of future environmental pollution.

Reviews, evaluates, and interprets Federal, State, or Local environmental regulations. Determines the applicability and impact on Cape Canaveral Spaceport environmental programs and identifies compliance requirements.

Develops contract requirements necessary to conduct specialized environmental studies, reports, and initiatives related to waste recycling/treatment/disposal, contamination investigation, remediation, and innovative and alternative environmental technologies.

Coordinates shipments of various types of waste materials for disposal and/or recycling in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements (DOT, RCRA, TSCA, etc.).

Functions as signatory on hazardous waste manifests as an authorized agent for government facilities.

Manages waste storage and accumulation areas, including hazardous waste Transfer, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF), in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.

Functions as Site Supervisor for post-emergency spill cleanup activities in accordance with OSHA HAZWOPER requirements.

Prepares environmental reports or studies detailing types and causes of pollution and probability of future environmental problems. Prepares procedures, handbooks, and internal operating instructions to establish guidelines for meeting general environmental compliance objectives.

Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Ensures safe operating properly manage by-products, which may include hazardous wastes, resultant from workplace activities. Specific responsibilities may include proper waste segregation, containerization, handling, and responding to emergencies in a manner


consistent with Company policies/procedures and site-specific workplace instructions.

Normal work environment may involve moderate risks and discomforts requiring some special precautions such as participating in spill cleanups, hazardous waste shipments and field assessments for environmental impacts.


Education / Training:

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Environmental, Physical, Biological Sciences, or related field, and five years of related experience.

Upon employment, additional Company certifications must be acquired and maintained for operation of specific equipment and systems. This may include initial and recurrent training in one or more of the following functions:

HAZMAT employee (49 CFR 172 Subpart H) within 90 days of employment and triennially thereafter.

RCRA TSD worker (40 CFR 264.16 and FDEP Operating Permit) within six months of employment and annually thereafter.

HAZWOPER employee (29 CFR 1910.120 (p) and/or (q)) within six months of employment and annually thereafter.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Requires knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations and rules regarding waste management (hazardous waste, universal wastes, PCBs, asbestos, biomedical, DEA controlled substances, etc), transportation (DOT), and emergency response and post-emergency response cleanup from releases of hazardous substances (OSHA HAZWOPER).

Requires the use of mathematics and the ability to read, analyze and understand written information including regulations and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, where information includes precise data and terminology, possibly of a confidential nature.

Use standard computer applications plus common computer peripherals and office equipment, as applicable, (e.g. spreadsheet, word processing, database, presentation, E-Mail, project scheduling/status, Internet search, printers, phones, fax machines, copiers, etc).

Use field communications equipment and specialized test and measurement equipment/applications associated with the specific work discipline (e.g., two-way radios, cellular phones, beepers, chemical testing equipment, bar code scanners).

Working Conditions:

Must thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees. General office environment may require minor lifting and bending.


Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures. Participates in and supports the KEMCON safety program. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Identifies potential hazards, concerns, and safety incidents and reports to supervisory personnel.

Demands of work assignments require some physical exertion such as climbing, walking, stooping, as well as, other more specific, but common, characteristics such as use of personal protective equipment.
