IMSS is seeking an experienced Aerospace Medicine Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant for a challenging and unique opportunity to work at NASA’s premier multi-user spaceport located at Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

 

This dynamic position works directly with the IMSS medical team in the rapidly developing government and commercial aerospace industry.

 

This is a full-time position with full benefits, paid time off, paid holidays and company profit sharing.

 

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·       Supports the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Office of Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Health Branch physicians to carry out projects and assignments

·       Writes and monitors Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Plan for KSC

·       Supports crewed space launch activities

·       Develops and monitors simulations for continued launch team readiness

·       Supports crew quarters, PCEF (Primary Contact Examination Facility) and astronaut launch activities, as requested by NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) and KSC medical operations.

·       Supports human research within the BERL (Biomedical Engineering Research Laboratory) or other NASA-approved area, as requested

·       Participates and fulfills roles as described in the EMS Plans during missions

·       Coordinates Spaceflight Medical Operations checklist items

·       Serves a Point of Contact (POC) and leads in various capacities for mission-related meetings

·       Interact with other agencies on behalf of Kennedy Space Center NASA

 

REQUIRED CLINICAL ABILITIES:

 

·       Examines patients and determines appropriate plain radiological imaging and clinical laboratory tests

·       Interprets test results, evaluates examination findings, formulates patient management plans, and communicates such to the patient and appropriate NASA representatives

·       Determines the need for and assist in specialized medical care and treatment

·       Performs physical examinations as part of the pre-employment, periodic and occupational health surveillance programs

·       Maintains currency in Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support or equivalent (i.e. Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support)

·       Maintains familiarity with all emergency procedures and applicable medical operating instructions, policies and instructions.

·       Maintains a full working knowledge of applicable medical standards.

·       Provides medical care with limited equipment, supplies, and personnel at remote sites as required

·       Provides diagnosis and care on the basis of medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests

·       Directs patient-care activities of nurses, technicians, and other assigned staff

·       Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews

·       Refers to private physicians those injuries or illnesses, which will require time off from work, specialty medical care, or extended follow up

·       Serve as interface with local private physician for referral of patients and interchange of information important to patient health and safety

·       Maintains familiarity with all emergency procedures and medical operating instructions and policies

·       Assists in active implementation of company initiatives to ensure compliance with OSHA VPP, ISO, JCAHO and other mandated regulatory or conformance regulations/standards

·       Performs other assigned departmental operations to maintain workflow

·       Must possess excellent communication skills

·       Must be able to perform well in a team environment

 

 

 EDUCATION/TRAINING

 

·       Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the U.S.

·       Ability to obtain appropriate Florida State licensure with applicable education/recertification requirements completed

·       5 years medical experience in aerospace medicine, primary care, critical care, or occupational health setting, with at least 3 years as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.  Aerospace medicine experience preferred.  State specific practice requirements may apply.

·       Complete knowledge of principles relative to Federal, State and Local regulations relating to areas of specialty, data management and reporting.  Requires the ability to read and interpret written information and effectively communicate verbally and in writing where information includes scientific terminology. 

·       Possess a valid driver’s license

 

 

Working Conditions:

 

·    Ability to work without limitations or restrictions in varied conditions, including indoors, outdoors, climb stairs, lift/carry 30 lbs, provide medical care in a pre-hospital setting, and fly in helicopters

·    Must thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees

·    General office environment with infrequent direct patient care duties

·    Periodic on-call schedule in support of manned space missions

·    May require lifting of patient-loads and bending for confined spaces

·    Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures

·    Participates in and supports the IMSS safety program

·    Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility

·    Identifies potential hazards, concerns, and safety incidents and reports to supervisory personnel
